Winni’s mother Nalah came to us very pregnant, malnourished, and having endured a lifetime of pain and abuse. She had never known kindness, compassion or the feeling of knowing that she could count on someone to provide consistent care, foo…d, or safety. Best described as being cocooned in depression, despondency and a lackluster defensiveness, she has emerged a content, loving and happy horse. More remarkable, she has been the most amazing mother. Our perfect little Winni will never know that the last foal born at the location from which her mother had been rescued had been pulled apart by wild dogs. She will never know the hollow gnawing feeling of starvation, or the brutality of abuse, and the fearful torment of living in such terror filled circumstances. Nalah’s beautiful foal is healthy, happy, and secure. She is a big girl now, living with her friends Coco and Joey in our “nursery”, all three completing their first week as “big kids” after being weaned from their wonderful mothers (who are also doing well….almost relieved, knowing their precious little ones are safe…protected…loved). Winni happily cuddles her baby friends, is happily cuddled by nurturing “Red Riding Hoods”, and plays with a freedom and joyfulness that makes our hearts smile, and her mother know…..they are both safe.
