They say that an adoption is a family affair, and in the case of our beloved Dr. Seuss, a few words go a very long way. Dr. Seuss hadn’t always had the best of luck, having been both abandoned and in need of rescuing…twice, but Dr. Seuss’ luck changed when he came to Red Bucket. When our Arizona friend, supporter, and donor Andrea decided that it was time for her to add one special horse to her family it was little wonder that she began making the weekend trek to Red Bucket. Leaving nothing to chance, Dr. Seuss did everything shy of renting a halo to lock in the deal. He patiently demonstrated excellent ground manners in the cross ties, all while looking adorable. He behaved like a gentleman under saddle demonstrating both willingness and obedience. During his turnout time with the other “nuckle-heads” he left the little herd of friends and trotted over to Andrea’s two sons nuzzling them and gentle exploring their clothing with an interested and loving muzzle. While the Elwell household is most likely truly run by their cats, Dr. Seuss wrote the new ending to his very own fairy tale by cantering down the length of fencing a straight shot (and smooth move) to a warmly greet Andrea’s husband Jerome. While the other horses played and sparred, Dr. Seuss kept a close distance to his new family, with the exception of a bit of showmanship as he did a victory lap around the pasture demonstrating how fast he could run….and how beautiful his mane looked flowing in the wind, all while his new family gripped the rails of the fence…watching their newest family member kick up his heels in pure joy! Congratulations to the entire family, and congratulations to Dr. Seuss…..or should we say Dr. Elwell…..?
