When Wallace came in, he behaved as if even he didn’t believe that he mattered. What was even worse, the other horses, ponies and donkeys behaved and treated him the same way; from outright picking on him to downright ignoring him. He stood, isolated and withdrawn, in the back of the paddock. Our many failed attempts to find a friend for Wallace left us scratching our heads and tossing at night, trying to find a place for Wallace to claim as his own, fi…t in, and experience companionship. The Red Riding Hoods stepped up and showered the little pony with love, treats, human affection and reassurance. Polo, who was now enjoying the gentle retired life that he so rightfully had earned, was starting to show signs of boredom…mostly we saw it in the shadow of his eye. Polo, grateful for life and family, never complained. Our attempts to match him with a turnout buddy or small herd left us disappointed, and Polo politely resigned himself to being just a little lonely. Perhaps it was a fluke, or something just a little more, that led us to wonder…about Wallace. In a cautious and hopeful moment, we introduced Polo and Wallace in the bull pen. Wallace never returned to a world of isolation and withdrawal. It may have been the gentle grooming on his withers, Polo’s welcoming nicker, or the invitation to share hay under the shelter of Polo’s paddock that helped initiate Wallace’s move to Polo’s place. Wallace moved in, leaving behind his baggage…and isolation. He became more than just a side-kick, but a family member. Karen too, who has discovered a new and profound definition of family, friendship, and love, has extended the offer (jointly with Polo and Marigold) of a forever home to our once-forlorn Wallace. In this happily-ever-after tale, Polo received the very best birthday gift EVER, and Wallace gets his very own birthday…and a family of his own! If you wonder where Wallace is, the answer is….Wallace is home! Congratulations to Wallace and his family! Wallace is Red Bucket’s 161st forever home found.
