February 2015 Horse Highlight: Maestro

Maestro is a giant teddy bear of a horse, a gentle giant Belgian/

Thoroughbred cross…ready and waiting for someone to come

and love him!

Meet Maestro! According to assistant trainer Lauren, who rides him

on a regular basis at Red Bucket, “He is a very well trained horse and

a dream to ride!” He has a super cool personality and is always

willing to please. Maestro has been well trained. He even knows how

to do work in the disciplines of dressage, English, Western and trail.

He is a joy to ride bareback, and feels almost like riding a huge

rocking horse! Maestro is nothing short of delightful!

Maestro’s story was of a horse that we hear too often. He was given

away with the hope that he would be loved and taken care of. It is a

dangerous and scary reality that horses “given away” are not always

as valued as they deserve to be. Only two years later he was found

emaciated and homeless. He started out as a happy healthy horse,

only to be neglected and found underweight, with sore feet (due to a

screw in his hoof wall).

After getting Maestro situated at Red Bucket and into the care and

love of the volunteers here, it became apparent how much Maestro

enjoyed just being paid attention to. He loves to be groomed and

going out on hand walks.

Olaf the Giant is one of Maestro’s best buddies at the ranch. They

both share alfalfa, albeit in separate piles, while enjoying the

enrichment of being with another horse in the east paddock. Baldwin

is Olaf’s neighbor and they clearly have established a very strong

bond.

Draft crosses are known for their big bones and gentle spirits.

Maestro is no exception to this rule. He is kind hearted and a big boy

at about 18 hands. He is very rider friendly with a large gait and an

even larger heart. Maestro has a calm and kind disposition; he is

ready and willing to find a truly loving place to call his very own

forever home!
