Many thanks for all of your thoughtful and compassionate comments and well wishes about our newest resident, Callum. Perhaps the most difficult (and recurring) question that you asked is, “Why, oh why did Callum have relatively new shoes on, when his broken knee injury is most likely at least 6 months old…and completely untreated?” The answer…and we swallow twice before responding…is that they were still trying to ride him. His body tells the tale of prol…onged and daily abuse, and yet his eye is questioning, pleading…and confused. We will spend the next several months trying to un-confuse him and we will also pull the shoes, which are not consistent with a professional job and contain double the nails that a trained farrier would use. Callum has not completely exhaled yet and is a bit territorial about his stall and his food. He does seem to have a penchant for carrots and having his brow gently stroked (it may well be the only place on his body that does not hurt), but soon he will learn to enjoy the feeling of tender touch and the peace that comes with rescue.
