Today we said good-bye to Callum, but we as a community adopted him first….a commitment, a contract, an adoption fee…it was real, and he deserved to be chosen, because he was real, and he mattered to us. He had clearly been abused every day of his life. He came to us with a broken knee, fresh saddle sores, and the expression of a horse who knew a lifetime of worry, injustice, and hurt. To say that we loved him would do an injustice to the very deep and profound emotion that we carry in the fabric of our morality and spiritual fiber. Our grief is compounded by knowing that his previous life was one of pain and fear. We are grateful for having had the privilege of taking care of him, and trying to rectify the many days of agony that preceded his…albeit brief…second chance. And yes, he was dearly loved. Perhaps the strongest act of love is letting go when you do not want to say good-bye. As is our custom and tradition, Callum’s life will be honored and celebrated at his memorial on Saturday, November 7th at 5:00pm in front of his stall. All are welcome.
