Tilley had spent a great number of years not mattering. When hay prices skyrocketed, her owner of a good many years gave her, without question, to a person who claimed that she had a home for her as a brood mare. Tilley immediately ended up at an auction that sells horses by the pound to kill buyers who send terrified and helpless horses to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada. While it probably does not bear repeating what we all know about the horrific and brutal deaths that these horses suffer, it is worthwhile to say a few things about our dear friend. Tilley was named in honor of our friends and kind supporters, John and Karen Tilley. She bounced back from her years of neglect and terrifying ordeal with a grateful and kind benevolence. Her kindness was unshakeable and we never saw her even cock an ear or misbehave.Tilley quickly earned our trust and was one of the first horses that our new volunteers learned to groom on. In spite of a previous knee injury, she was not only very rideable…she again demonstrated trustworthiness, outstanding character, and a kindness and willingness to please under saddle. Tilley passed over the rainbow bridge due to colic, after a long day of trying desperately to save her. Her ranch was full of friends that day as we were tending to our other horses and had a dedicated group of Jr. Reds preparing fundraising materials to help other deserving horses. Our activity and hearts stopped as our friend soundly trotted over the rainbow bridge having been loved, wanted…and mattering to a great number of people. As is our custom, Tilley will be toasted and celebrated at her stall; details will follow. Thank you to the wonderfully compassionate Dr. Brigid Murphy and the selfless Red Bucket Team.
