His only crime was that he was old. Only that shouldn’t really matter…he had at one time been loved, and they had owned him for over 25 years. But their daughter had grown up…and grown away. Horses are expensive…especially ones who are just standing around, and Shavers had been standing around now…for years and years. He was waiting for someone (maybe even the girl who had once loved him) to come and visit…maybe brush him, or take him out of the cramped stall for a walk…or maybe just notice him. He had become very lonely, sad and depressed. His old feet and legs ached with age and lack of care. The solution presented to his vet was euthanasia. Only his vet (and later friend) doesn’t put down healthy horses, so she called Red Bucket…and as these rescues go…it is all about what is in the best interest of the horse. He has the medical care to keep him comfortable, and the love and dedication of an entire Red Bucket team. When we comment on how lucky Shavers is, his guardian angels always corrects us ” He is the best horse in the world, we are the lucky ones” today Shavers turned 30 years old, and he celebrated by bucking in his turn out. Happy birthday, Shavers…we are so happy that you were born! XXOO
