We cannot imagine parenting under such stressful circumstances. A young first time mother, trying to survive the dangerous, incredibly stress filled, and anxiety ridden feedlot. Fighting for her own life, and that of her one month foal. To add to the panic the VERY young mare is feral and has a very deep scar, most likely created from a terrifying and painful encounter with man. Today Lola remains wary and watchful, guiding her now 3 month old colt Ranger behind her with the skill and vigilance of a boxer, the athleticism of a gymnast, and the protective and absolute no nonsense and unwillingness to negotiate of a tenured Defense Attorney. We are giving her the space to not feel the need to defend herself, and the slow acceleration of a quality diet in which to nourish her baby. Later today our resident Momma horse Nalah, and her precious and precocious filly Winni , will get a turn out in the paddock adjacent to Lola and little Ranger in hopes of providing a small slice of piece of mind to our newest residents. While there is still much that we do not know….there are some things that we know with great clarity: Lola and Ranger are safe, we will protect and provide for them, no matter what….and Ranger has an amazing and wonderful mother…who has nurtured and protected him with the heart of a horse.
In the recognition the village that has helped us to save them, we humbly thank Shirley Puga, Marlene Dodge, the Shiloh Foundation, Cindy A. Lee and The Wags and Menace Make A Difference Foundation, Head Trainer Kimberly Fohrman, the generous and humble Durham Family, and the volunteers who selflessly serve.
