Well…our patience and respectful distance has certainly paid off! We have made it clear to Darla and the many well-wishers who have been chomping at the bit, wanting to get a peek…or maybe a little feel of our adorable new born filly, McGarrah….that Darla is in charge! Initially defensive (rightfully so) and protective of her new baby, we allowed mom to set the rules. Consistency has been the one constant that our feral mares have experienced in their few months at Red Bucket. With the ground rules regarding little McGarrah clearly established (by Darla) and followed (by the Red Riding Hoods), Darla has relaxed her guard…and her apron strings. As momma enjoys her turn out and munches on a constantly replenished pile of fresh hay, little McGarrah explores her new world, making friends and practicing her tricks. While the foal of a feral mare may not have the same early imprinting opportunities…make no mistake, this little girl has her mother and a whole red village behind her! McGarrah has been touched EVERYWHERE…and has made all of her favorite spots available for scratching (under her neck…and of course, her little bum). She is healthy, curious, playful…and as you can see from the photo…very sill! McGarrah who stood and nursed in well under an hour, is also ahead of the curve in her socialization….and Kick bucking technique. Stay tuned for more happy updates on the adventures of our newest little Red Riding Hood….McGarrah! Lest we be incomplete in this post…we are so very grateful!
