With a heavy heart we bid farewell to a real class act, our wonderful and noble friend Styles. He had been abandoned four years ago when a kids camp relocated and took all of the “good horses”, and left the injured and the elderly. They had been without food and fresh water for over 3 weeks. When we first laid eyes on them, they were emaciated almost beyond recognition. Their heavy neglected coats were covered with clumps of mud, their manes hung in tangled ropes, and their feet were grossly over grown and necrotic. The five friends: Cheyenne, McGraw, Ledger, Jack and Styles seemed more a work of a very bad fiction writer instead of living, breathing, and feeling creatures. Styles emerged from the trailer with his head high and his tail set. He was grateful for everything, expected nothing, and carried himself with the class of an aristocrat, yet none of the swagger. He is credited with being the first horse that many new volunteers get to groom, he was gentle, kind, and trustworthy…a true friend. We are mourning him deeply. Jack, the last remaining friend is clearly grieving the loss of the friend that had been at his side, survived the impossible, and emerged on the other side, to enjoy four years of being treasured, valued and loved. He left us with the same class that he arrived with, his head still high, his tail set….and an undeniable sense of gratitude. While his old body had given up, he left with a dignity that we were committed to him keeping…and taking with him, on his journey to run with his special friends over the rainbow bridge. Saturday, August 31st at 5:00pm we will toast Styles at the paddock that he shared with Jack. His friends are all welcome.
