There were 12 sisters in all, beautifully bred Irish Thoroughbreds. Their only crime was an owner who was a criminal…and criminally neglectful. The mares housed together in a filthy and barren pen were slowly perishing. Deprived of even t…he most basic of care, the horses had lost more than an enormous amount of weight…they had lost hope. Only hours from being picked up by a kill truck, a tip by someone who couldn’t live with the senseless destruction of so many lives, led us to them…and led them to safety. 3 1/2 years ago they were moved to pasture and slowly (much slower than we wanted) we have brought them in for training, and the promise of their second chance. This week it was Zen’s turn. The cacophony of whinny’s and calls to sisters that she has not seen in over 3 years ricocheted the normal tranquility of Red Bucket. The calls escalated, and only after their emotional reunion occurred did the calm return to the ranch. Reunited, Zen, Shasta, Delilah and Priscilla groomed, nuzzled and nickered…seemingly relieved to have their family and relationships restored. They are more than sisters, more than friends…they are survivors. Welcome Home Zen!
