She is the most precious of any animal that we have ever tried to help. She has a history, and a story, as they all do….but thanks to the ladies in Oatman Arizona, we get to actually know Windy’s. Windy joined the herd of donkeys that roamed (perhaps ran) the town of Oatman, which had at one time been a mining town. When the mine closed, the miners left town and ….also left the
donkeys. With little else to do for entertainment, the donkeys made baby donkeys, and on and on it went. The town became a tourist town, and people came to see these darling donkeys swagger, trot, and amble into town. The donks developed sweet a tooth and poor diets of corn chips, candy bars and junk food. They also developed fat deposits and bad teeth from the poor diet. Every year, Windy produced another darling foal, and every year, she became more dear and more gentle. When the BLM “gathered” a number of the donkeys, Windy was gathered and moved to a BLM facility. Because she was older than ten years old, she was placed in a sale pen for ten dollars. We knew that it was time to make that call…..and we did. Windy is now the benevolent grandma donkey, who has through her gentle and peaceful demeanor helped to settle our little donkey herd. Her gentle softness is teaching our wild donkey’s not to be afraid…and to begin to trust. We welcome Windy…to us she is priceless.
