She is skinny, but that doesn’t surprise us, nor does the fact that she is terrified, and she like so many of the unwanted has endured abuse that is unconscionable. She had been hobbled, both front legs tied together, with a rope tied around her neck secured to her front legs and to a back leg that was tied to a tree. A lip chain ran through her mouth and was also secured to a tree. They then tried to breed the confined and petrified mare, as the stallion brutally ravaged her, she broke free from her confinement, breaking both the rope that bound her hind leg, and snapping the chain under her lip. She ran, hobbled for over a mile…under a freeway pass…over a busy boulevard with on coming traffic, skidding out and painfully climbing to her feet. If there was any luck at all, it was that the panicked mare smelled nearby horses, and that a gate (which we are told is always locked) was uncharacteristically open, the mare bolted into a stable, skidding across a drive, only to find herself climbing to her feet amongst a friend, Debbie. Who called Red Bucket after she called Animal Control. The mare is starting to settle in and has made friends with Harris and Roulette. She seems to enjoy her bedding, the abundance of care, and the gentle soft reassurance of our team. We doubt that this mare will ever be able to be ridden, and we know for sure that she will never be bred. We also know that she is safe, and that it will take time to erase a terror filled past. Lauren named her Talulah, because she wanted the mare to have something beautiful. We are grateful to Debbie, thankful for all those who contribute to our work and make it possible to save and serve. Welcome Talulah…to a ranch that you own.
