We constantly marvel at the tenacity and resilience of the donkey. Far be it for a Red Riding Hood to ever call one of our donkey friends stubborn ….or use a despairing label or name. We do however have great respect and affection for these intelligent, thoughtful, and ever so endearing little beings. We also know that the very tenacity that we so admired mixed with the donkeys natural self-preservation places them in a category of high risk and a target for those who abuse. Mr. Rogers is no exception, and is very exceptional in his ability to forgive and befriend. The rope burns on both of his hind pasterns were so deep that they scarred markable circles around both rear legs branding him as a victim of what we would declare to be unthinkable abuse. We wonder how he even walked or could bear weight after what was obvious repeated degrading and violent acts against him. While Mr. Rogers will still flinch and recoil if we move too quickly, he demonstrates kindness, gentleness, and a desire to belong. He leads like a gentleman, is polite, and has endeared himself to all of us, both horse and human. Even in his intake process or post gelding care, he has never been anything other than perfect in his ground manners, displaying a lovely temperament and remarkable dispposition. The residents on a ranch that was purchased to protect and heal, have also found Mr. Rogers to be intriguing and quite captivating. The horses of Red Bucket, and those of us dedicated to making the world a better….safer….and happier place for all equine welcome our newest addition. Welcome Mr. Rogers!
