December 2014 Volunteer Highlight: Lonnie Parsons

…nnie was privileged to bring her 14 year-old son to the Ranch as part of his community service for school. “We scrubbed stalls for the gala. It was back breaking work but worth the effort!” Lonnie shares. “He is fascinated by my passion, and he wants to learn more about how he can help. I love how this group just sucks you in! The more I give, the more I want to give. I am fulfilled beyond my wildest dreams, and I hope that I can contribute to my…

January 2018 Adoption Celebration: Jax and Julia

…ome. However, sadly, his lady love passed away and he was heartbroken; completely devastated. Enter the lovely Mia, a beautiful young off-the-track Thoroughbred mare who had never been raced and was full of youthful energy. The light in Jax’s eyes was shining once more as he took this young horse under his wing and started showing her the ropes. Julia says that he is so protective of his charge that he stands over her while she lays sleeping, ever…

May 2015 Adoption Highlight: Laura and Piper

…ed in, moving forward with common sensibility. Piper was immediately welcomed into the Jarek family, and things seemed as thought they couldn’t get any better. As time passed, the Jareks had the opportunity to move out of state, bringing along Santino and Piper to reside on their new property that is equipped for horses. The once emaciated mare now lives on 50 acres that allow for daily turnouts. She is spoiled and we couldn’t be happier for her….

May 2015 Culture Message

…a phone call, and later a veterinary report. The phone call I think was a combination of intent to communicate, but perhaps more so, a subtle plea for help, input and support. The conversation had the impact of a sucker punch to the solar plexus, leaving me at the stage right before one starts to gasp for air. I found myself uncharacteristically quiet, trying to wrap my head around unexpected news while sifting through potential options that left…

July 2016 Culture Message

…hile we have learned to think of him as a bit of a comic, there is other comedy that occurs in our back pasture. Perhaps the most innocent and most “red-donk-ulous” is the donkey turnouts of little Petey and Miss Manners. Now, while we have become less reactive to a large athletic knucklehead jumping out of our pasture for a little attention, the babies are in a different category altogether. Their mothers, Tornado and Millie, view the turnouts as…

August 2015 Culture Message

…in. Ironically, we had a similar search occurring on the other side of the ranch. Polo, a very dear “retired” geriatric who had been lovingly adopted by Karen several years ago, was looking a little bored. It was in our effort to add richness to Polo’s life…that we thought about introducing him to our wayward Wallace. The union was that of a hand and glove; Polo found the missing piece in his life and Wallace found a home. Our culture is one of co…

November 2013 Adoption Celebration: Rosie

…acclimate. This tactic worked, and Rosie was quite happy to come back to the Ranch with a new fresh attitude.   When Linda approached Red Bucket in search of a horse to adopt, Red Bucket appreciated her many years of devotion to horses and thought that she and Rosie might make a match. Upon meeting Rosie, Linda described her as “utterly adorable.” Their connection was evident. Susan Peirce says, “Our job is to understand what the horse is telling…

February 2017 Adoption Celebration: Dixon

…t the connection to Dixon was just too strong and the adoption was completed. One of Sherry’s passions is horse camping, and she wanted a big, strong, willing horse to share those experiences with. She laughs when describing some of her initial experiences with Dixon. For one thing, he has a huge stride which required some major adjustments on her part. Now he gives her some of the greatest experiences she has ever had with a horse. Another issue…

November 2015 Adoption Celebration: Guinness

…re cared for, appreciated and treasured beyond words is what validates the gut-wrenching (not to mention back-breaking) work of equine rescue. The passionate and glowing reports she gets from former adopters via email, text, and Facebook are heart-warming reminders of how truly valued and cherished these horses are now in their forever homes, and that their past, no matter how horrific or painful, is behind them for good. This is especially true w…
